Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
